We REALLY enjoyed this video and the activities from the educator guides. There is a ton of information and lots of really fun and educational activities. My ONLY problem is the price. I don't know too many homeschoolers who can afford $299 + $19.95 for each DVD Title to get the printed educator guides as well. Even $69.95 (or $139.90 for both grade levels) + 19.95 for the PDF version with the DVD. We will definitely be using this resource when we study Oceans later this year!
Good News...if you are a homeschooler, you don't have to decide if you can afford it or not! I don't know how long this deal will last but if you buy What Makes a Fish a Fish?, Who Lives in the Sea? and/or Dive into Diversity and mention that you are a homeschooler you will get the PDF versions of the Educator Guides for FREE!!!!!!

TOS Review ~ CapJaxMathFax

Today we are reviewing CapJaxMathFax. CapJaxMathFax is a quick and easy way to learn (and track) Math Facts without the use of flashcards.The hardest part of using CapJaxMathFax was the download/install/run process! However, Captain Jack has EXCELLENT customer service and helped us get up and running very quickly!Below you see a screenshot of CapJaxMathFax. This screenshot shows you what the "Play for Rating" screen looks like. Basically you enter your name, select add, subtract, multiply or divide and check play for rating. When you follow these steps you will see the summary chart on the side with the mastery rating. Along the top you will see how many facts were answered and how many were at the Super (less than 3 seconds) level and the average time (in seconds) it took to answer the fact. When played in this mode the scores are tracked and able to be viewed in the Desktop Folder by the parent. A student can also play in practice mode. Our ThoughtsWhile Ladybug could have used this product (and probably will soon), Unicorn is the one who REALLY needs work on her basic math facts. She has enjoyed using this program and it is helping her to learn her facts. One thing I would like to see is an option for the parent (or teacher) to be able to adjust the Super Seconds. Unicorn has some difficulties with seeing the question, figuring out the answer, and then typing the answer all in 3 seconds. I would love to be able to give her 5 seconds for this. This feature would also make the product easier to use with younger children. With Ladybug she will tell me the answer and I will type it for her so she doesn't have to locate the numbers on the keyboard as well.

Our Thoughts

The kids really like the videos. The demonstrations are fun and engaging. A couple things would make this series better: a materials list, links to a webpage with more explanations on why/how the experiments work the way they do and maybe even some extension ideas. In a nutshell, the videos are great as an introduction to topics or to get kids excited about Science. However, if you are looking for more than just an introduction into Science you are going to want more than just these videos.

Our ThoughtsUnicorn and Ladybug really enjoyed this product. They loved watching the experiments and are excited to so Summer Science Camp with daddy and these experiments! Unicorn's favorite experiment is "Dry Ice Bubbles" and Ladybug's favorite is "Unburnable Money". Because of our recent move we haven't had much time to try the experiments but the video does a great job of taking you step-by-step through the  experiments and explaining why they work. I love that I can grab the video and pop it into any DVD player and my kids are getting exposure to Science. We used the DVD's in the car as we drove between our old house and our new one. We have watched many of the experiments multiple times.

Structure of the Earth Activity

My thoughtsMy kids and I really enjoyed working through this text. The amount of information was just perfect for my kids' attention spans (ages 4, 6 and 12). We had fun doing the hands-on activities...in fact we had so much fun I don't have many pictures! My favorite part of CKE Earth & Space is that I can use one curriculum for all 3 children! One thing I don't really like is that the Activity Book is a separate purchase. All the pages in the Activity Book are included in the text so you can just photocopy them so you don't need the downloadable version. However, the download is very convenient for printing so you don't ruin the spine of the text. I would love to see the Activity Book download included in the price of the text or at least under the current $12.95 price tag.

My ThoughtsI LOVE the interactive format, it saves paper, printing and ink costs and doesn't take up any space on my shelves. I love that it can be saved for each child and that I can correct/edit in the same document! While it is a little pricy for me to consider as my sole curriculum I love the idea of using 1-2 of the Literature Guides per year to mix things up a bit!

Final Thoughts

We are really enjoying learning about the different fallacies of arguments. The curriculum is well written and the "conversations" with Socrates make it fun to read.

TOS Review ~ K5Learning.com

We have recently had the opportunity to review K5Learning.com in our home. As the name implies it is geared for grades Kindergarten through 5th. However, all 3 of my children were able to use and benefit from it. I had both Unicorn and Ladybug take the placement tests. Unicorn tested out of most of the reading lessons (everything except the comprehension which she tested into late 5th grade) and tested all over the board for math (I was not surprised as this is her weakness). Ladybug tested into the mid- to high first grade level in both math and reading. Monkey just started at the beginning as he is only 3 years 10 months old.

K5 Learning has a set curriculum however, you are able to assign lessons to your child. They also have math fact and spelling practice (you can use your own spelling words too).

The Assessment reports are fairly easy to read and display the information in a couple ways (see below). I was not too surprised by my girls' results. Although I did expect Unicorn to do better in the comprehension portion. The assessments are used to determine your child's placement and to develop a customized program.

TOS Review ~ Reading Eggs

We have been using Reading Eggs in our home since August and we love it! I have three children and all three of them use it to some degree. 
Monkey (age 3 years 10 months) and Ladybug (5 years 9 months) both use Reading Eggs (the original site) and Unicorn (age 12) uses Reading Eggspress. 
Monkey tried Reading Eggs in August and he wasn't ready but boy is he now! He will literally throw a fit if I don't let him "play" Reading Eggs! He is on level 17 and doing great!
Ladybug has been using Reading Eggs on and off for the past year (because of the reading products she has been blessed to review). Because she was already blending words and reading some sight words I had her take the placement test (sample question shown below) and she tested into level 45. She is now on lesson 64 (like I said due to other review she uses this program sporadically). Ladybug also enjoys Reading Eggs and is excited to be using it again!

My Thoughts

I like how Reading Eggs/Reading Eggspress progresses. It is not too fast or too slow and there is just the right amount of repetition. I like how each lesson is broken down into smaller mini-lessons and students can stop at any point and it will pick up right where they left off. Lessons can also be repeated if necessary or desired. My only concern is that when Unicorn tried the Reading Eggs Placement she didn't get any questions wrong and it put her on lesson 70.

Our ThoughtsI am really impressed.  In fact I was so impressed, that I bought All About Spelling Level 1 to use with Ladybug and All About Reading Pre-Level 1 to use with Monkey. I like that lessons are scripted but that I can go through something quickly if the content is already mastered. I especially like that the letter tiles are the same for both All About Reading and All About Spelling so once the basic or deluxe kit is purchased you can purchase the rest of the items that you need (the dividers and storage boxes) a la cart! Finally, I also like that for each additional child that uses the program only the student activity book is needed! Ladybug enjoys the program as well. She really likes the readers!

Today I get to share with you two really great products from Beeyoutiful! First up:B.A.L.M.B.A.L.M. come in two "flavors": Peppermint and Orange. We were blessed to sample the Peppermint lip moisturizer. We live in the desert and it is REALLY dry this time of year. The B.A.L.M. really does keep your lips soft and moist...well, at least it would if it didn't keep running away!
