Week in Review ~ Week 7

~Family Accomplishments~

~Still working on Article of Faith #4
~Finished Magic Tree House #10: Ghost Town at Sundown
~Discovered we need a new way to teach responsibility and chores around here! Accountable Kids is one I stumbled upon yesterday...Anyone have any experiences with it?
~We also need a computer based Math Curriculum for when Dreambox is finished (it is only K-3)! Any ideas?
~OK...here is one that is not really an "accomplishment" but is kind of fun: We ordered The Muppet Show from Netflix and my kids really love "Mahna Mahna"!

~Unicorn's Accomplishments~

~Worked on shapes and measurement in Math

~Stated that Latin is her favorite subject!

~Finished notebooking pages for Delaware

~Started notebooking pages for Pennsylvania

~Finished Ben and Me

~Continuing to read Shh! We're Writing the Constitution.

~Finished notebook page on Spinner Dolphin

~Worked on "Unit 6 - The Church Grows" in Hands-on Church History

~Went to Activity Days and finished an entry in her journal (that they made 2 weeks ago) and learned about good manners and courtesy. For the first entry in their journal the girls made Bioglyphs.

The round face means female. The 2 long curly strands of hair mean that she was born in February and that she has long red hair. The 29 freckles indicate she was born on the 29th day of the month. The circular eyes mean she has perfect vision and the eyes looking to the side mean she has blue eyes. Her eyebrow shape indicates that her favorite color is purple. The shape of her nose means she walks to school (from the kitchen to our school room). Her necklace doesn't have any charms because she is not involved in any sports, clubs or groups. She has a right ear because she has brothers and a left ear because she has a sister. The one dot on the lower part of her left ear is because her sister is younger than her and the 2 dots on the lower part of her right ear is because her brothers are younger (for those of you who don't know Unicorn has a half-brother from her father's remarriage). Her mouth indicates that she loves art and her cheeks indicate that she loves chocolate ice cream and mint ice cream. Her 1 eyelash indicates that she has 1 pet.

~Memorized her part for the Primary Program at Church

~Practiced being a good friend

~Learned the signs for friend, grumpy, excited, frog, lizard and more (I am losing track because she is learning them so fast)!

~Learned the letter "T"

~Learned the number "11"

~Made a Postcard

~Painted with a dropper and watered down paint

~Continued to participate more at preschool

Week in Review ~ Week 6

WOW! I can't believe we just completed 6 weeks of school (and only one day off for Labor Day)!

~Family Accomplishments~

~Reclaimed the Living Room and Dining Room: They are both free of boxes and other than bare walls are finally finished after having moved into this beautiful house 10 weeks ago (this is what I did instead of "schooling" on Labor Day)!

~Decided to have History and Science be more "student-led". In Science, I am allowing Unicorn to choose her topic (ocean animals) while I choose the format (Non-Fiction books & Notebooking). For History, I am choosing the topic and she gets to choose the format (Literature & Notebooking).
~Went to the Library
~Watched Keeping the Promise (a movie based on The Sign of the Beaver)

~Unicorn's Accomplishments~

~Dreambox: After 27 hours she has completed 121 lessons (8 lessons this week)
~Latin (RosettaStone): Completed Unit 1 Lesson 2 Pronunciation (current grade 93%)
~Math: Working on Telling Time
~History: Started learning about the Constitution. Reading Shh! We're Writing the Constitution and Ben and Me
~Science: Read through some books about Ocean Animals and choose 5 to learn more about: Dolphin (Spinner), Sea Gull, Flying Fish, Narwhal & Ribbon Seal.
~Religion: Finished Unit 5: Moving to Ohio (Hands-on Church History)
~Typing: Only 6 pages left!
~Elective: Preschool Teacher's Aide (Unicorn helps me when the preschoolers are making "projects")
~Library: Traded 6 year old library card for new card, checked out books on Dolphins, Horses, Gems, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Oceans, Disguises/Costumes and more)!

~Ladybug's Accomplishments~

~Learned to sign: dirty, clean, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, more, friend, happy, sleep
~Learned to spell: Mom & cat

~Drew a Self-Portrait for her journal

~Made an "I Like..." picture

~Is working on staying in her room during "Quite Time" and "Bed Time"!!!!!!!
~Got her own Library Card! She was so excited!

~Monkey's Accomplishments~

~Learned to sign: sleep, more and eat
~"Wrote" in his journal

~Worked on fine-motor skills by tracing circles

~Drew Self-Portriat for Journal

~Made an "I Like..." picture

~Participated more in Preschool

This a "Feelings Wheel" they made that didn't photograph very well! They turn the wheel and practice making the "feeling face" in the "mirror".

~Working on eating more variety (currently milk, hotdogs, cereal, plain pasta and yogurt are his staples)

~Dad's Role~

This week (at The Homeschool Village) we're chatting about Dads! How does Dad participate in your homeschool? Is he the principal? The encourager? The wallet? What makes your husband a fantastic homeschool dad? In what ways does he enrich the homeschool experience? And don't forget about Grand-Dads! How does Grandpa help out?





While Mom (that's me) does all of the scheduling, choosing of the curriculum and most of the teaching Dad plays a very important role. Since Dad works from 1-9pm he is home in the morning when most of our learning takes place. Dad joins us (and often leads) family prayer, scriptures, memorization and read-alouds. This happens during breakfast. Then while Mom proceeds downstairs with the children for "learning time" Dad is upstairs getting things ready for lunch (grocery shopping, prepping and cooking)! During this time, if Mom needs and extra hand (academically or disciplinary) Dad steps in! Dad also joins us for as many field trips as possible (most of them) and helps teach. Dad's main teaching focus is in the kitchen and math (a subject he teaches at the alternative high school)! In the future Mom envisions Dad teaching kiddos how to use power tools and when Monkey is older, Boy Scouts! Dad is also the encourager, he is very supportive...I wouldn't be able to homeschool without his support. Last but not least, Dad, works very hard to provide for us and makes it possible that Mom can work from home and homeschool our beautiful students!

As for Grand-Dads...well, 2 out of 3 grandpas live out of state so they read the blog and chat with the kiddos on the phone. They also enjoy going on "field trips" when they come visit or when we get to go visit them. We are blessed to have 1 grandpa who lives about 45 minutes away. Grandpa (and Grandma) like to go with us on our field trips and take the kids hiking and to parks.
